Mid Century

A history of Arundel
Arundel began as a Saxon town before the romans arrived with a population of a few hundred and became a thriving market and port. Arundel has been dominated by the Dukes of Norfolk ever since they came into the possesion of Arundel castle at the end of the 16th century, to which it still remains to this day.
In the mid 13th Centurty the friars arrived to build the first religious buildings in the town, which is referred to by locals as 'blackfriars'. The ruins of the blackfriars buildings are still by the town bridge to go see, and the Parish church of St. Nicholas was built in 1830. The castle was extremely damaged during the Civil war, where it changed hands three times and wasnt fully restored until the 20th centuries beginning. At the end of the civil war Arundel was in a poor state due to the war, and didnt really recover until the end of the 18th century, when it had developed into a small market town again with a population that by 1901, has reached 3,000 people. 3650 is the current number for Arundel's population.
In 1846 a railway station had been built at Ford along the coast from Brighton to Portsmouth, which was called "Arundel Station". The railway had a result on the surrounding area, causing the port and market to close as the 20th century was welcomed in. Arundel's actual railway station was built in 1863 when the line was extended down to the Arun valley. In 1868 the 15th Duke of Norfolk began work on a new Catholic church, which was completed on 1873. The church later recieved cathedral status in 1965.
The town is now a popular tourist destination famous for Arundel castle, Arundel Cathedral and the Blackfriars historical building. 2001 saw Arundel have its first ever market for eighty years, the Arundel farmers market which has now become a monthly event.
